Abare Festival (Fire & Violence Festival)
あばれ祭
July 3–4 (1st Fri–Sat of July)
For 360 years, the fishing town of Ushitsu has opened Noto's Kiriko festival season with the Abare ("rampage") Festival. On the first night, about 40 towering kiriko lantern floats swirl around blazing pillar torches as sparks rain down. On the second night, portable shrines are violently thrown into the sea and river and dragged through fire — the rougher the treatment, the more the deity is pleased.
