Koikoi Festival (Yamanaka Onsen)
こいこい祭(山中温泉)
September 19–20, 10:00–21:00
Since 1961, the hot spring town of Yamanaka has held a festival whose very name — "Koikoi," meaning "come, come" — is a call to visitors from afar. Townspeople, geisha and overnight bathing guests dance together to the famous "Yamanaka-bushi" folk song, and the steps deliberately mirror the simple Tanko-bushi so newcomers can pick them up at once. By day, women's and young men's mikoshi and a giant lion dance parade the streets.
