Yuwaku Bonbori Festival
湯涌ぼんぼり祭り
October 17
Unique in Japan, the Bonbori Festival began in 2011 as a real-world recreation of a fictional festival from the anime "Hanasaku Iroha," set in a town modeled on Yuwaku Onsen. Fifteen years on, it draws anime pilgrims and locals alike. Wishes written on "nozomi-fuda" tags are burned in a shrine rite as bonbori lanterns glow around Tamasen Lake. Expect crowds — check the shuttle and entry arrangements in advance.
