Nafune Grand Festival (Gojinjo Daiko)
名舟大祭(御陣乗太鼓)
August 1, Gojinjo Daiko drumming from around 15:00
In 1577, as the warlord Uesugi Kenshin invaded Noto, the villagers of Nafune are said to have donned grotesque masks and beaten war drums through the night, terrifying the army into retreat. Their descendants still perform Gojinjo Daiko here at the seaside shrine, and the drumming is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
